If so the service tbould be given or th road doe not answer the pur poaa for which it was chartered and the public money put into it. We maintain, with the Journal, that the double daily service is required, and that the resource, if dsveloped, are ample to justify it. That, in fast, the only way to make the road pay, is to make every possible uss of it, and make its use necessary to the public, and thereby compel the patroDage of the pveople. The initances are frequent, and quite familiar to us, in which per sons. In d ifTerent portions of the State, , having businee at New Berne, avoid making the journey on account of the long detention made neceaaary at that point by the running of the trains. Men also drive up and down the line from poiDt to point, who would ride on the traina if they were frequent enough to avoid a day's detention. The extra mail service would of course be com pensating. I: is not likely that the poatoffice department can be induced, for th Dreeent. toextend a double daily mail aervice further down than New Berne, and the management of the road ' may properly consider the double daily train aervice only from Ooldboro to ; that point; which would ba one hundred and twenty mi lee of extra ronoing per day. The round trip aervice over the whole line is one hundred and ninety mile, which one locomotive covers every twenty-four hour, having twenty-four hours lay-off. A double ( daily service, as far aa New Berne would involve three hundred and ten mile running every twenty-four hour. which the two passenger locomotive ooold eaaily perform, alternating the short run. The present service is too easy. In addition to the twenty-four hour lay off at New Befne, there are lay-over four hqnr at Ooldsboro, and about nine at Morehaad City, and this nine hour reat follows a run of about thirty-six mile, after a lay-off of twenty-four hours. There is practically not a dollar of additional motive power needed fcr a double daily aervice, and no more cart neceaaary than the road should at all time have at its command. efforts 1 n boh -1 1 . !
